St. John's International Women's Film Festival

The skies are crying

Maybe it's the weather, or maybe it's the over-production of insulin from pounds of leftover Halloween candy, but I am pining for the Festival. It all happened so quickly. One minute I was basking in the reflected glory of our fantastic Newfoundland filmmakers at the Film forum, the Majestic and the Arts and Culture Centre, and the next I was duking it out with an SUV on Water Street for the only parking spot within shouting distance of the lonely, lonely Festival office.
But wait, as I write all this, I am feeling a glimmer of the excitement from the Film Forum featuring fantastic forerunners in Film and Television - what a thrill to share in the conversations with luminaries like Camelia Frieberg, Anne Marie Laplante, Tom Alexander and Carol Whiteman. And isn't that the tingle from opening night with Down To The Dirt and the amazing Mark Bragg. I still haven't washed the hand that shook director Justin Simm's hand, or the cheek that producer Anna Petras kissed, or the eyes that beheld principal actor and author Joel Hynes, or the shoulders that luxuriated in a hug from actor Phil Churchill.
Perhaps this miasma isn't post-festival depression, perhaps I need a shower.

Tour Of St. John's with BABS!
October 15, 2008 | Submitted by BABS

It wasn't too long ago that I was a CFA or Come From Away - but now I am working my way up to NBC - Newfoundlander by Choice.

Here's a few other things you should know too.

Restaurants
There's not much pub grub in the pubs. The Duke stops serving at 4pm, and The Ship at 8pm, Nautical Nellies at 9pm.

Other restaurants stop serving at 10, so be mindful.

Celtic Hearth on water is 24 hours.

Specialties - Dressing on fries with gravy. Dressing is like turkey stuffing.

Pan fried cod tongues - are yum and served with scruncheons - fried up bacon fat.

Drinks
You can buy beer at corner stores, but the liquor store is up at Sobey's near The Rooms, and there is a smaller one on Queen St. but it closes early.

Bars close at 3 Wed. to Sunday.

Hear that Buzz?

That’s the sound of the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival's staff going mad with last minute details! Long days and even longer nights have gone into creating a fantastic program and planning for an impressive opening night gala! Hope to see you there – make sure when you pick up the program – the week looks awesome!

Something came up this morning when we were getting ready to post the trailers from the moovy.ca contest – one of the trailers contains original lyrics to the music from a popular song. The person who made the trailer asked us to wait – hold off until they researched the legalities of this situation. Have any of you ever encountered that situation?? Comment and let us know how you handled it.

Oh and thanks to the wonderful folks at Bell Canada / Down East Mobility – they donated cell phones to the festival! I got the one with the camera!! I’m going to post pictures from the festival – silly ones. I hope you do too!
