The Women’s Film Festival presents “Scene & Heard: An Evening of Films to Celebrate International Women's Day”
The St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival, in partnership with the Department of Women's Studies [1], is pleased to host Scene & Heard, a selection of Festival 2008 films in honour of International Women’s Day. The Scene & Heard screening/reception will take place on March 7, 2009, 8pm at the INCO Innovation Centre Theatre, Memorial University.
“We will be showcasing 75 minutes of award-winning short dramas and documentaries that are not only made by local, national and international women filmmakers but feature memorable, powerful and inspiring female characters,” says Festival Executive Director Kelly Davis. “This joyful, heart-wrenching and hilarious program is a wonderful way to celebrate International Women’s Day!”
The audience will have the opportunity to mix and mingle with some of the featured filmmakers and discuss the films at the post-screening reception, also at the INCO Innovation Centre. In order of appearance, here are the films being screened, click through for trailers and descriptions:

• Portrait Of A Dancer [5], Ruchi Bakshi, India
• Passages [6], Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre, Canada (QC) Named one of Canada’s top 10 short films of 2008 by Canada’s Top Ten [7], and Best Canadian Short by the Atlantic Film Festival
• Heartless Disappearance Into Labrador Seas [8], Justin Simms, Lois Brown, Anna Petras, Canada (NL) Atlantic Film Festival Joy Award Winner
Proceeds fund the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival [9] – Canada’s first festival of films by women, now celebrating its 20th year. The Festival, which is held yearly in mid-October, screens internationally acclaimed films from around the world on subjects as diverse as the human experience.
Tickets are $20, $15 for seniors/students and can be purchased in advance at the Travel Bug (155 Water Street) or by calling 754-3141 or emailing [10] the Festival. Tickets will also be available at the door. Donations to the Festival are also gratefully accepted (the Women’s Film Festival is a not-for-profit organization and a registered charity).
